This month, we turn our attention to a critical yet often under-discussed topic: liquidity management and the strategic use of credit. Two recent reports - Bank of America’s Family Office Study and Deutsche Bank’s Financing Report - have shed new light on this area.
Our 📊 Chart of the Month, drawn from the BoA report, illustrates the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of family office borrowing. The data reveals a split in philosophy: while 34% of offices leverage debt strategically to build wealth, a substantial 42% borrow only when absolutely necessary (with a further 6% never taking on debt). Note: As this data originates from a bank, we must account for potential sampling bias toward credit-active clients…
The “Why” and “How” The chart highlights a tension in the market. While “Selling Assets” remains the #1 method for accessing liquidity (42%), the primary reason families take on leverage is “To stay invested” (44%).
This signals that despite the liquidity crunch caused by extensions in private markets, families are utilizing credit lines to protect their existing positions. Growth remains a priority, however, with Direct Investing and Acquisitions tying for second place (38%) as the key drivers for leverage.
